Bolt down bollards (also known as surface-mounted bollards) are fixed directly onto an existing concrete substrate using anchor bolts. They are the preferred option where excavation is impractical, undesirable, or simply unnecessary.

Technical Characteristics

  • Base plate mounting: Typically 200–300mm square, welded to the bollard shaft
  • Fixings: M12–M20 Rawl bolts or chemical anchors, depending on load requirements
  • Substrate requirement: Sound concrete, usually a minimum of 150–200mm thick
  • Installation time: Rapid — often under one hour per unit

Performance Considerations

Bolt down bollards rely entirely on the integrity of the concrete slab beneath them. When installed correctly, they offer excellent resistance to low-speed vehicle impacts and are ideal for:

  • Warehouses
  • Retail parks
  • Car parks
  • Loading bays

They may not enjoy being hit by a fully laden articulated lorry, but then again, neither would most things.

When to Choose Bolt Down Bollards

If you want strength without digging a hole the size of Kent, bolt down bollards are your answer.

Dig-In Bollards: Old-School Strength That Still Works

Overview

Dig-in bollards (also referred to as cast-in or concrete-in bollards) are installed directly into the ground and set in concrete. They are the traditional heavyweight option less convenience, more brute force.

Technical Characteristics

  • Embedment depth: Typically 300–600mm (or more for high-impact ratings)
  • Foundation: Concrete footing, often C20 or higher
  • Installation time: Longer, due to excavation and curing
  • Load distribution: Impact forces transferred into the ground, not just the surface

Performance Considerations

Dig-in bollards excel where maximum impact resistance is required. Because the load is distributed below ground, they offer superior performance against deliberate vehicle strikes.

Common applications include:

They are not glamorous. They are not subtle. But they are very good at stopping things violently and suddenly.

When to Choose Dig-In Bollards

  • Maximum security is required
  • Ground excavation is feasible
  • Long-term or permanent installation
  • High vehicle impact risk

If bolt down bollards are “strongly worded advice”, dig-in bollards are “absolutely not”.

Stainless Steel Bollards: Looks That Kill (Access)

Overview

Stainless steel bollards combine physical protection with architectural appeal. They are frequently used in public-facing or prestige environments where appearance matters just as much as performance.

Material Grades

  • Grade 304: Suitable for most urban and commercial environments
  • Grade 316: Marine-grade stainless steel, ideal for coastal or corrosive locations

Technical Characteristics

  • Finish: Brushed or polished
  • Corrosion resistance: Excellent, especially in 316
  • Maintenance: Minimal — no repainting required
  • Fixing options: Available as bolt down or dig-in

Performance Considerations

Do not be fooled by their refined appearance. Stainless steel bollards are structurally robust and often reinforced internally. They provide effective vehicle deterrence while blending seamlessly into modern landscapes.

Typical uses include:

  • Office developments
  • Retail frontages
  • Public spaces
  • Hospitality and leisure environments

They say “welcome” while quietly implying “but please do not drive through here”.
